About Cabi-Soft - Baldy

Baldy was a simple yet addictive platform game I wrote during the long 8 months it took to write Talisman. It was a kind of release from the never-ending code searching and changing that took up all my time whilst trying to make a point and click adventure game work the way I wanted it to.

The main character (based on me) has the simple task of collecting disks from various levels, whilst avoiding static spikes and traps, and moving projectiles.

Initially starting out easy, the levels got progressively harder until everything was thrown at you.

The game was coded to handle 2 sprites move left to right, to sprites moving right to left and two sprites dropping down. Some levels had just 1 or 2 projectiles, but the later levels let loose with all of them. Some of them were also random, so you never knew where they would come from.

One level, I think it may be 19, was almost impossible. It took me something like 20 attempts before I managed to complete it.

The press slaughtered it - well not that bad, but they said it was just another game amongst hundreds of other PD titles. This was true, but play it enough and see past the graphics - and you'll discover a very addictive little jumper.

On the down side, but not at the time, is the control. It was written for Amiga joysticks, ie digital ones. It does not respond well to analogue, in fact at can be impossible to control when using an emulator - but don't blame that on the coding, it works great with digital !

Baldy is available for download.
